New Year living in London

London is one of the most vibrant, multi-cultural and downright exciting places to be. Now is the time to move there with our help! Philippa Norman 01/30/17

It’s 2017 and there has been a deluge of posts on the matter. As much as we might try and get past the notion that a New Year is just a restart of a calendar rota and not the restart of our lives, we just can’t seem to. There’s something in the desire to see a New Year as fresh start, isn't there? It might not change everything, but sometimes it’s helpful to have a marker at which you can make a change. You can use it as your starting line moving forwards and see the hurdles you want to clear in front of you.

That starting line can give you the courage to make that change, it can give you the impetus, and you can finally act on a decision you may have made some time ago. In this dreary month of January, when everything seems grey and maudlin, you can decide on a change that will light up your future. That’s why a New Year is the perfect time to think about a move. You might have always dreamt of moving to the capital, making London your home and pursuing your career dreams. Well, now is the time!

Why London?

Good question, and one that has some good answers. London is one of the most vibrant, multi-cultural and downright exciting places to be. You can be challenged by the city, grow in it and ultimately conquer it if you put your mind and skills into the task. Although the professional and work aspect of it is a big reason to move here, there are loads of other aspects of the capital which make it an awesome place to live and work.

If you appreciate the music scene and an environment that fosters talent then just consider that in 2016 London-based acts, Adele, Coldplay, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jess Glynne, Phil Collins and Years & Years, were in the top 40 biggest albums of 2016 list according to the Official Chart website.

It’s not just musically that London has birthed some of the great modern-day acts, the capital has also played a key role in providing the landscape for huge films. There is A Clockwork Orange, and then of course Harry Potter and countless Bond movies including Spectre that have used London as a backdrop. According to London.Gov, London is the world’s third busiest film production centre with over 14,000 shooting days.

So it’s easy not only to catch a glimpse of a celebrity walking down the Oxford Street, but also potentially on set! If films aren’t your thing but festivals are then rest assured, London has that covered too. Over 250 festivals take place in London every year and lots of them are free to attend! The Notting Hill Carnival attracts nearly a million people every year and is one of Europe’s biggest street festivals. The best thing about these festivals is the variety of culture, which is to be expected when there are over 300 languages spoken in London, more than any other city in the world. Then there’s the markets, check out our blog post on Weird and Wonderful London Markets .

If culture is your thing then the capital has lots to make you tick. Three of the top ten museums and galleries in the world are in London and if that weren’t enough then pick from upwards of 800 others scattered throughout the city. Or why not stop by one of the four UNESCO world heritage sites in London? Take your pick from the Tower of London, home of the crown jewels, Maritime Greenwich, with its multiple attractions, Westminster Palace, the meeting places of parliament the governing body of the country, or Kew's expansive Royal Botanic Gardens, housing the largest and most diverse botanical collection in the world.

Why 2017?

The real question here is, why not? This is the year, this is the time, don’t let your fears get in the way. It’s time to do what you’ve always dreamt of and come and live in London.
